The talk will explore the modern fascination with polyphony in sound and surreal imagery in art as a prophetic symptom of the spiritual crisis facing us in the new millennium.

That symptom will be explored first in terms of a summary characterization of Cubism and modern art emerging from the stimulus of Picasso's avant-garde deployment of an African mask in 1907, and then in a similar sketch of hip-hop as popular culture version of the same kind of "primitivist" fascination (including examination of the work of Afro-Caribbean surrealist Wilfredo Lam and New York grafittero Jean-Michel Basquiat).

At stake in the analysis is the meaning of this century-long "insurgence of subjugated Africanity" as an omen of the direction in which greater justice and healing may lie at this late date of seemingly ill-fate on planet earth. At noon Debbie Aliya will lead a multi tradition worship service utilizing prayers and readings fromm a variety of world faith traditions Jim Cooper will provide live musical moods with flute and piano. Veggie lunch will follow 3 PM A Concert;John and Alice Coltrane in India featuring-Jim Cooper and Friends;jazz Jim Perkinson;poetry -- Meera Patricia Kerr;vocals/bhajans
