IN A THREE-PART SERIES ENTITLED"STORIES JESUS TOLD",RICHARD A RHEM EXAMINES THE NATURE OF THE MYSTERY OF GOD AS IT COMES TO EXPRESSION IN THE LIFE AND TEACHING OF JESUS IN THE GOSPELS. IN THE SECOND PRESENTATION,MR.RHEM WILL FOCUS ON A PASSAGE FROM LUKE'S GOSPEL-7:36-50.HIS THEME WILL BE"TRANSFORMING LOVE"IN WHICH HE WILL CONTENDTHAT LOVE TRANSFORMS-AND ONLY LOVE TRANSFORMS. LAW CAN CONTROL; POWER CAN COERCE; FEAR CAN CRIPPLE; BUT THE EXPERIENCE OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE IS TRANSFORMING. IT IS GOD AS TRANSFORMING LOVE THAT IS REFLECTED IN THE STORIES JESUS TOLD.
Richard A. Rhem is pastor
emeritus of Christ Community Church in Spring Lake, Michigan,
which he
served for 37 years. He graduated from Hope College (B.A.) and Western Theological
Seminary
(B.D. & M.Th) in Holland, Michigan. He continued his studies at the University
of Leiden in the Netherlands,
where he received a Doctorandus degree, and did post-doctoral studies with Professor
Hans Küng at the
University of Michigan. Re-Imagining The Faith, a sampling of his sermons,
was published in 2004 by River
Road Publications. A video, Beyond the Pale: A Journey to Independence, profiles
a once fervently conservative
preacher and his path to independence. Marcus Borg, Distinguished Professor
in Religion and Culture, Oregon
