Friday, April 4th: Richard Heinberg: Peak Everything-The Coming Century of Decline: Author of 8 books, including “The Party’s Over,” and “Peak Everything: Waking Up to the Century of Declines,” Richard Heinberg is a world renown Peak Oil educator, starting our film series with eye-opening reports! Watch his PowerPoint show from the 2007 Fourth U.S. Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions, “Planning for Hard Times-Learning How to Live Well Using Far Less Oil.” After the film, share comments and ideas with the group, submit a survey for suggested actions and films, and pick up a copy of resources to connect you with solutions.
Friday, April 11th: The Power of Community, How Cuba Survived Peak Oil “When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s, the country faced an immediate crisis—feeding the population—and an ongoing challenge: how to create a new low-energy society. Cuba transitioned from large, fossil-fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a more sustainable one. This film tells the story of the Cuban people’s hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity—through cooperation, conservation and community, told in their own words. As the world approaches Peak Oil, Cuba provides a valuable example of how to successfully address the challenge of reducing our energy use. (2006, The Community Solution, 53 min.)
Friday, April 18th: David Korten: “The Great Turning---From
Empire to Earth Community”
Author of “When Corporations Rule the World” and “The Great
Turning” speaks on the damages caused by a switch from matriarchal societies
to authoritarian, hierarchical, patriarchies. The very definition of a “corporation”
is that of a sociopath. Another great speaker on the changes ahead and needed
solutions, he warns that the paths back to a more sustainable, Earth community
must be laid by this generation if we are to survive the end of fossil fuels.
Friday, April 25th: Megan Quinn Bachman: “Curtailment and Community-Peak Oil and Climate Change Survival Strategies” Megan is the Outreach Director of The Community Solution and Youth Representative on Globalization Issues. She is a dedicated, uplifting leader and strong feminine voice in the Peak Oil movement. She invites us not to dwell on the shortcomings of the movement, but to celebrate our successes. “A clear and valid alternative vision is needed,” she says and without being a “doomsday-er,” relays the urgent message of cutting consumption of fossil fuels.
Friday, May 2nd: Peter Bane: “Peak Oil and Permaculture” Peter Bane is the publisher of “The Permaculture Activist” magazine and co-founder of “EarthHaven” eco-village in North Carolina. Speaking at the Third U.S. Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions, “Beyond Energy Alternatives,” Peter shares new ways of living that are not based on fossil fuels. He discusses design with nature using principles of permaculture. (102min)
Friday, May 9th: “The 11th Hour” Actor Leonardo DiCaprio's documentary on the global environmental crisis paints a portrait of a planet at risk while also offering some exciting and radical solutions for making life on earth sustainable. Tapping the brains of leading scientists and thinkers -- including Stephen Hawking and Mikhail Gorbachev -- the film ultimately delivers a hopeful message: Our planet may be in crisis, but that doesn't mean it's too late change. Friday, May 16th: A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash (2006) Produced by award-winning filmmakers Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack, this documentary examines the world's dependency on oil and the impending chaos that's sure to follow when the resource is depleted. Straight from the headlines, this hot-button topic may represent the world's most dire crisis. Through expert interviews, the film spells out in startling detail the challenge we all face and underscores our desperate need for alternative energy.
Friday, May 23rd: David Orr: “Peak Oil, Climate Change,
and Our Future” David Orr is the Chair of Environmental Studies at Oberlin
College in Ohio, well know for Environmental Literacy in Higher Education. He
initiated a green campus movement. He’ll speak on the history of human
relationships with carbon, peak oil, and climate change. (83min)
