The Ramayana epic is one of the principle teaching
epics of Hinduism. Ancient, and existing in many different versions and languages,
the Ramayana has traveled throughout South and South East Asiawhere it has
become woven into the art and mythology of many cultures in Bali, Indonesia
, Sri Lanka, Burma , Thailand and even China.
The art, poetry, theology and philosophy of the Rama epic
cover all aspects of social and personal affairs and is at once a text on
statescraft, family values, warfare and personal spiritual salvation. The
union of the Soul with God is its ultimate aim.
The version of the Ramayana called the Adyatma
is a text of contemplative spiritual practice and non-dualistic gnosis set
within the Rama epic story but focused primarily on the discovery of the Supreme
Person of Rama hidden individually and universally within the souls of
all living beings.
This text was frequently read to Paramahamsa Sri Ramakrishna by his disciples
at the Dakshineswar Temple. It was one of his favorite texts.
