The Dilemma for Women in Religious Life
10 am-noon-   Lakeshore Interfaith Institute, 6676 122nd Ave, Ganges Mi

                                                            Dr. Nancy Falk, Ph.D.

Over the years since, many feminist theologians and historians of religion have written critiques of women’s roles and experiences in religion.  All too often, especially when directed at traditions outside the Judeo-Christian orbit, these fall on deaf ears.  Shown some place where women have suffered because of some religiously validated restriction, religious leaders will point to some other feature of their tradition that glorifies women or offers special protections for them.  Dr. Falk’s many years of study have shown her that very few religions are consistently oppressive towards women.  Instead, many practice a much more subtle form of discrimination, which she has come to call the value/power dilemma. So, Do Religions Treat Women Fairly?  A talk and open discussion.

Dr. Nancy Falk was for many years Professor of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University.   Her specializations within that field were the study of religion in India and the cross-cultural study of women’s roles and dilemmas in religion.   The textbook Unspoken Worlds that she co-edited with Dr. Rita Gross of the University of Wisconsin has remained in print for twenty-five years and is used for courses on women in religion taught around the world.&nbnior research fellowship from the American Institute of Indian studies, and numerous other awards and grants.   During the 1970s she served as Associate Director-at-Large for the American Academy of Religion, and has served many committees and projects of that organization.  She is also an elected member of the American Society of Religion.
