Civilization is at a critical environmental crossroads. The path chosen will affect not only many generations to come but the entire Biosphere. Evidence collected by thousands of scientists over the last decade, now points to a Global Warming caused primarily by humans use of fossil fuels. Many call Global Warming the greatest threat to both civilization and the ecosystems of mother earth. Coal, itself a source of radioactivity and many toxic emissions such as mercury and lead is also a leading source of greenhouse gas. As earth’s population increases to 9 billion by 2040, many countries, such as China and India will be doubling their number of coal fired power plants. At present, many nations are scrambling to maintain access to oil. Peak Oil,which is the moment at which more petroleum is extracted from the earth than can be replaced by new sources, is upon us now. The evidence is at the gas pump. The prices will only rise . Wars, present and future, will be fought to secure a share of the dwindling oil supply. Need this be so?
Richard Orawiec has spent the last 38 years working selflessly, for a sustainable future for America . He lives "off the grid" in the Allegan forest, and sells and installs, solar and wind power units for both residential and commercial electric power generation. He has shipped solar powered refrigerators to islands in the South Pacific and worked for years rebuilding and outfitting with solar power, an antique electric boat first used at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. Richard, a powerful and entertaining speaker, will, with the aid of Richard Heinberg's book, The Party's Over, give an overview of the energy crisis and its causes, demonstrate some practical solar power units for the home and then lead us on a tour of the solar and wind powered home of Maynard Kaufman, PhD., and Barbara Geisler, MA., in nearby Bangor. As a bonus for attending, we will also be the first to recieve gas ration cards for our two gallon weekly allotment of petrol.
Maynard Kaufman, Emeritus Professor of Religion and Environmental Studies at WMU, has been active in many aspects of the environmental movement for about 40 years, as a writer , teacher and organic grower. Barbara Geisler is a very active peace and environmental advocate, a Sufi teacher, and is an expert organic gardener. They will show us how we can live lightly on the earth by living off the grid and growing organically the food we eat. All are welcome.
