How does an American Catholic woman , a Lay Carmelite , understand the
ancient Vedic Goddess , Durga Devi, Goddess of the Harvest and Destroyer
of the Demons? Her festival at this time in India and worldwide, amongst
the Hindu diaspora, is celebrated for more than a week, during which time
elaborate and beautiful images of the goddess are constructed out of
clay and straw , erected in temporary shelters , worshiped for nine days
by her devotees with holy chanting, hymns, marching bands, and mounds of
offered food and flowers. Some of the images are 20 feet tall and
beautifully clothed and decorated. Entire neigborhoods are lighted with
colored lights evoking the Christmas lighting in the West. The effect
is like Thanksgiving ,Christmas and Fourth of July combined.
Mrs Blay-Stroba has been able to harmonize in her own life, the sublime
message of the Crucified Savior with that of Durga, Protectress of Her
Children and destoyer of the demonic forces. She will tell us how.
